Homemade candy for your Valentine love
Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be just about making the same old Valentine’s card and a bouquet of roses for that one you feel special about. When it comes to candy, this can be a daunting task that isn’t so easy for everyone to understand the complexity of confectionary mastery. But if you want to make Valentine peppermint hearts that will bring back childhood memories, you’ll love this amazing DIY tutorial.
Recipe
Here’s everything that you’ll need to make peppermint candies right in your home kitchen without anything fancy or complicated at all. Let’s start with the materials you’ll need:
- Glass mixing bowl
- Mixing spoon
- A small heart-shaped cookie cutter
- Silicone rolling matt
- Large cookie sheet
- Two standard paint sticks
- Peppermint oil
- Red food coloring
- Confectioners powdered sugar
- Meringue powder
The method
Take 4 cups of sifted powder sugar and add 3 tablespoons of meringue powder and place this into a glass bowl. You can add about 4-5 tablespoons of warm water. Using 4 tablespoons will make a thicker paste so be careful of your mixture. You can always add some confectioner powdered sugar to reduce the tackiness. Now when you get the mixture to a dough-like consistency, you want to separate two halves in equal parts.
Add a bit of red food coloring to one ball and mix it all the way through so you get the desired color. The other should remain white so don’t add any color at all. Now what you’ll do is add a few drops of peppermint oil to each ball and work that all the way through each ball. You can do this with the initial fondant ball but having two peppermint flavors can add stronger or weaker flavors to the finished candy product.
The next step is making two separate snakes that you’ll roll out individually. These should be at least 12 inches in length and won’t be no more than one-half inch or less in diameter. Then you twist them around each other like snakes wrapping their bodies together. This will make better sense later as you’ll find out. When you’re done, you’ll have two colors that are wrapped together in two separate tones.
The next step is to slice your snake into pieces that are one inch in length. These should be placed standing on end on the silicone rolling matt. After you’ve slice all of the pieces, you should be ready for the next step. Take some silicone coated parchment paper and put this over the top of the fondant. Place the two paint sticks and place them on each side of the rolling matt.
Then you use the cookie sheet to push down from the top to squish the fondant down. You can alternatively roll it flatter with a rolling pin to get the shapes thinner. The result should be a swirl effect that looks like Brach’s peppermint swirls. Your cookie cutter must fit inside each squished shape to get a unique heart-shaped cookie form. Carefully peel off the parchment paper and remove the excess fondant and allow each fondant to air dry.
The end result will be a sweet crispy candy heart that has a built-in swirl and genuine peppermint flavor. What better way to make Valentine’s Day even sweeter with these custom-created candies for your sweetie. See more of our awsome things.
